Walking among the flags of the Olympic nations and past the colorful metal sculptures depicting the Olympic sports, you can’t help but feel like a part of something… more. From the weight racks to the conference room wall to the mattresses in the dorms, the Rings hang ever-present. The biannual USSTAG Fitness Camp out at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs is one of many changes to the US Olympic Sailing effort in the past few years, and in my opinion, one of the most symbolic of our new mission: teamwork. I experienced this a bit as a singlehanded sailor, but being out here as a recently minted doublehander really adds a new dimension to things.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in my nascent 470 career is how much faith you must have in your teammate, and being out here with both the USSTAG as well as the USSDT has expanded that view tenfold. Forgive the cliche, but in this case, the whole is definitely, definitely, without a doubt, far greater than the sum of its parts.
