Efficiency is a term that is typically associated with sport and exercise training. From a nutrition perspective, being metabolically efficient simply means being able to use more of the stored fat in the body as fuel while preserving carbohydrate stores. This is important because it can help a sailor lose weight and body fat when combined with a training program.
The take-home message when it comes to making this nutritional change is controlling daily blood sugar. When blood sugar is high (by not eating the right foods), the hormone insulin is also high and this significantly reduces the body’s ability to use fat as energy. Luckily, a wealth of scientific research has given us the information to accomplish this. Combining a source of lean protein with a fiber-rich food such as a fruit or vegetable, will stabilize blood sugar. This scenario creates a more effective scenario in the body that allows it to burn more fat and improve health and performance.
